By the train
You can go from Hanoi to Lao Cai by the train and then get a bus to Sapa town. You can buy ticket at Tran Quy Cap station, travel agency and online.
Train schedule:
Hanoi – Lao Cai: The trains departs from Tran Quy Cap station at 10:00 pm and arrive at Lao Cai staition at 6:30 the next morning
Lao Cai – Hanoi: The trains departs from Lao Cai station at 09:05 pm and arrive at Tran Quy Cap staition at 5:30 the next morning

Price
the train rate is very messy. Sometimes you book via web or travel agent better than the purchase ticker from the train company.
