Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

Discover the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology—explore Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups through artifacts, photos, and traditional houses in Hanoi.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which is a little outside of Hanoi's main tourist area, is widely considered to be one of the city's most interesting cultural attractions and is well worth a visit. The museum opened in 1997 to study, protect, and show off the cultural heritage of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups. Vietnamese architect Ha Duc Linh came up with the building's design, and French architect Véronique Dollfus came up with the interior details. The two styles are a mix of modern and traditional.

The museum has both indoor and outdoor spaces for exhibits.  The main building, which has bronze-trimmed details and architectural features based on ethnic stilt houses, has more than 2,500 square meters of exhibition space.  The displays inside are grouped by major language families, such as the Kinh majority and the Tay–Thai, Mon–Khmer, Ka Dai, and Hoa minority groups.

The museum has a huge collection of almost 27,000 artifacts and more than 11,000 photos that show traditional crafts, clothing, rituals, beliefs, and daily life in a very clear way. The museum's main focus is on Vietnam's ethnic groups, but it also has some collections from other Southeast Asian cultures. Each exhibit is carefully chosen and organized by theme to give visitors a deeper understanding of Vietnam's cultural diversity. This makes the museum a must-see for anyone interested in the country's people, history, and traditions.
