The lake derives its unique name from the remnants of a downed American B-52 bomber that crashed into its waters on December 27, 1972. This occurred during the "Christmas Bombing" (officially Operation Linebacker II), an intensive strategic bombing campaign by American forces aimed at pressuring North Vietnamese leaders to sign a peace agreement. While defending the city, North Vietnamese forces downed 15 of these bombers, one of which plunged directly into this quiet neighborhood lake.
