Dong Xuan Market

Dong Xuan Market – A Historic Commercial and Culinary Landmark in Hanoi

Dong Xuan Market is the largest indoor market in Hanoi, located in the heart of the Old Quarter in Hoan Kiem District, approximately 800 meters from Hoan Kiem Lake. Built by the French in 1889, the market is not only a major trading center but also a symbol of the city’s long-standing commercial tradition. Despite being severely damaged by a fire in 1994, the market was carefully restored, preserving its iconic arched façade and historical value.

Shopping and Local Experience

Dong Xuan Market offers a wide variety of goods at both wholesale and retail prices, making it a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike.

  • Inside the Market:
The market consists of three floors (with the third floor currently inactive). The first floor mainly sells clothing, footwear, accessories, toys, souvenirs, handicrafts, and affordable electronics. The second floor focuses on fabrics and garments, including traditional Vietnamese ao dai, known for their elegance and quality.

  • Surrounding Streets:
The commercial activity extends beyond the main building into nearby streets. Visitors can explore areas specializing in pets, plastic goods, fresh produce, flowers, as well as meat and seafood, offering an authentic glimpse into daily life in Hanoi.

Culinary Highlights

The area around the market is a well-known street food destination.

  • Try traditional Vietnamese che, a sweet dessert made from beans, coconut milk, and crushed ice.

  • Don’t miss banh tom, a crispy fried shrimp cake served with fresh herbs and dipping sauce.

  • For a more filling option, enjoy a bowl of pork rib porridge (chao suon), a local favorite available throughout the day.

Visitor Tips

  • Opening Hours: The main market operates daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Weekend nights (Friday – Sunday): Open until 10:30 PM), while the street food area remains lively into the late evening.

  • Payment: Many vendors now accept cashless payments, reflecting the market’s modernization.

  • Best Time to Visit: During festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the surrounding area becomes especially vibrant with colorful toys and decorations.

  • Local Atmosphere: Beyond shopping and dining, visitors can experience the authentic charm of Hanoi through its lively interactions and everyday street scenes.
