Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival – Street food tour

Estimation distance & transfer: 300 km, around 7 hours transfer

Our tour guide will meet you at your hotel and drive you to Ha Giang. There are some breaks with various breathtaking views on the way. When we arrive in Tuyen Quang City, we'll embark on a scenic journey along the Lo River, where the roadside is adorned with lush grapefruit, tangerine, and orange plantations that stretch all the way to Viet Quang town. Here, we'll stop for a local lunch at a simple local restaurant before heading out onto the winding roads of the hilly landscape. We'll get to the homestay at about 3 p.m. Take some time to unwind and settle into your homestay accommodations. Enjoy the tranquillity and pure mountain air.

Have dinner with many wonderful local dishes, such as "Thit Lon Man," "Thang Co," and corn wine. After dinner, you have an excellent opportunity to participate in a local community performance. To learn more about the Red Dao people, you will immerse yourself in their music and culture.

 

Overnight in Thong Nguyen

Day 2: Trek local villages

Wake up early and enjoy the fresh air and sounds of animals like pigs, chickens, birds, etc. in the higher mountains of North Vietnam. Eat breakfast at your family's house. This morning, you will follow the winding paths and go through the rice terrace fields of Nam Khoa town, where people from the Man Ta Pan ethnic group live. You get a short break along the way to rest and take in the beautiful terraced fields. It will give you a chance to get a feel for the time. It will be amazing, especially when it tears up rice fields in September. This is your chance to learn about daily life and meet friendly locals like Man Ta Pan and Long Tunics Dao, who usually work in their fields or gardens. You can talk to them to learn more about their way of life. Having lunch with a family in the area.

 

Get up early and take in the sights and sounds of the North Vietnamese countryside. After breakfast, you'll go over twisting paths and across rice terraces on your way to the town of Nam Khoa, home to people of the Man Ta Pan ethnic minority. You'll stop for a while en route to take in the breathtaking vistas of the terraced fields. You can make a good first impression on them. In September, when the rice fields are being ripped apart, it will be quite spectacular. This is your chance to learn about daily life and meet friendly locals like Man Ta Pan and Long Tunics Dao, who usually work in their fields or gardens. You can learn more about their culture by engaging in conversation with them. Have lunch with the local family.

 

This afternoon, you will continue your hike to discover more of the village's beauty. Passing through antique tea plants that were planted more than a century ago with buds that had white hairs. Shan tea is the most well-known tea in Vietnam.

 

In the evening, have dinner at a local family and taste sample the many cuisines available here. Enjoy the locals performing some traditional community performances.

Day 3: Hoang Su Phi – Ha Giang – Quan Ba

Road transfer 135 km - 4,5 hrs

Morning

Enjoy a light breakfast at the homestay. Take the car to continue the journey to a very special new road of Ha Giang. Along the way, you can take in the breathtaking views of the North Vietnamese mountains. Have lunch at the local restaurant in Ha Giang City.

 

Afternoon

Check out the local museum and get an orientation to the city. You'll also travel across Bac Sum Pass, known for its winding roads and breathtaking mountain vistas. Getting to the Quan Ba region affords excellent opportunities for sightseeing and photography, with stops at Heaven Gate and Twin Mountain offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains.

Check out the Ha Giang Museum so that you may acquire an overall picture of the city. Then, go across Bac Sum Pass, which features a winding route and offers a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains. Getting to the Quan Ba region affords excellent opportunities for sightseeing and photography, with stops at Heaven Gate and Twin Mountain offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains. Check in your homestay. Dinner will be served at the homestay.

Day 4: Quan Ba – Dong Van

Road transfer 110 km approx.3,5 hours/ Walking & sightseeing 3hrs3hrs

Morning

Get up and you can walk around the village to see the morning life of the locals. Breakfast with a local homestay. Then you depart towards the little villages of Yen Minh. You will tour and travel through the Yen Minh pine forest, which has one of the best views and landscapes in Yen Minh, as well as a winding road and pass. Then, explore the back-dated market of local tribal people in Pho Cao and the Sung La valley, which is home to old H'mong, Dzao, and Lo Lo ethnic peoples. After that, spend an hour at the historical site of the Vuong family palace (H'mong King's Palace).  The mighty Vuong clan has its stronghold here. In the past, the palace served as a storage facility for opium and weapons, and a visit there will give you an insight into the lavish lifestyle of the Hmong nobility.

Have lunch at a nearby eatery.

Afternoon

You'll continue driving across the breathtaking Tham Ma pass. Then, head to Dong Van's rock plateau, a veritable geology museum free to any curious researcher. We then head to the town of Dong Van to stay the night. Dinner at a local restaurant. Dong Van is the busiest mountain town in Ha Giang Province, so take the evening to stroll around, have a cup of coffee, and experience the vibrant nightlife

Day 5: Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng – Cao Bang

Get the morning atmosphere at Dong Van Town in the early morning for more experience. Enjoy the breakfast. if your travel date is on Sunday, you can visit the weekly Dong Van Market to meet the local minority people and buy fascinating handmade goods and special products. And then drive over the Ma Pi Leng Pass to enjoy its magnificent and spectacular scenery en route. At the height of 2000 meters, the Ma Pi Leng Pass clings to the side of the undulating mountains which gives spectacular views of the valleys and terraced fields. The Nho Quy River flows, and above, the towering cliff rises to the clouds; a truly beautiful gorge below is one of the most spectacular natural sights in the country. Take your time and soak it up, as this is one journey to savor!

Our driver will continue to drive through zigzag down into Meo Vac Valley. Have lunch at a local restaurant.

 

After lunch, Our driver will then take you to your accommodation in Cao Bang and have a rest before enjoying a traditional dinner.

 

Note: If your travel time is not on the Sunday market in Dong Van, you will visit Lui Market can be arranged depending on the departure date.

Day 6: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Ba Be Lake

After breakfast at the homestay, you will go to Ban Gioc Waterfall, which is located on China's border. You will have another opportunity to meet and connect with the native Nung people in Phuoc Sen, a highland village noted for its traditional blacksmithing. The farming equipment created here is an essential component of the way of life, as seen by the neighboring rice terraces and fields.

The spectacular Ban Gioc Waterfall, which spans over 300 meters and is divided evenly between Vietnam and China, may be found among these incredible settings. You'll have some time to relax and soak in the stunning scenery around the falls, making this an ideal spot for some breathtaking photos.

After you've had your fill of the falls, travel over to Nguom Ngao Cave for a vastly different, but no less magnificent natural wonder. The cave is 2,144 meters underground and filled with amazing stalactites and stalagmites.

You will then return to Cao Bang town and travel down the "snake pass" to Ba Be Lake, where you will spend the night in a homestay built in traditional Tay style and run by a local Tay family. Here you may unwind after a long day and enjoy a tasty and authentic home-cooked dinner.

 

Overnight in Ba Be National Park

Day 7: Ba Be Lake – Hanoi

We'll begin our last full day of the tour by hopping on a boat right after breakfast and heading out onto the lake. It's up to you to decide how to spend your time on the boat; you may lounge around and take in the scenery or you can go for a dip to cool down. Amazing karst formations dot the landscape, and these are complemented by lush flora and an abundance of fauna.

 

The cruise then continues down the Nang River, where you may stop at Puong Grotto and marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites formed by river erosion, as well as observe the thousands-strong bat colony that lives here.

After lunch, take the car back to Hanoi, stopping en route at a tea plantation in the countryside. When we finally get to Hanoi, it will be time to say our final goodbyes.
